How Long Does a Kitchen Renovation Take?

Kitchen Renovation

The time it takes to complete a kitchen renovation varies greatly from one project to the next. There are lots of steps involved in a renovation project, and it’s important to understand these steps before moving forwards with your project.

Knowing how long you will need to make do with a partly-functioning kitchen will help you mentally prepare and plan accordingly. To that end, we’ve put together an approximate timeline outlining what you can expect when undertaking a complete kitchen renovation.

There are three essential stages to any home renovation project:

Stage 1 – Design
Time needed: 2—4 weeks

This first stage is critical to a successful kitchen remodel. There is a lot to consider when designing your kitchen. We recommend seeking expert help, as a designer will be able to assess both your needs, and your vision for your kitchen. At NeighborBuild, we would mock up a 3D rendering of your remodeled kitchen to help you decide what looks and feels right. Then, there will be some back and forth, as suggestions are made and implemented, before a final design is signed off in. This stage is exciting! You get to see your dream come to life, and we work with you to get it just right.

Stage 2 – Planning
Time needed: 4 weeks

The second stage sets the “stage” for your kitchen renovation. At this point, we would apply for any permits you might need, finalize the budget, and prepare a working blueprint for the design. We would also order your new kitchen cabinetry, which usually takes up to four weeks to be built and shipped. During this time, you get to go shopping! Choose your kitchen materials by visiting showrooms and design centers or leave it to us to bring you samples. This is the fun part, because you get to hand-pick your ideal tiles, flooring, countertops, and fixtures!

Stage 3 – Construction
Time needed: 6—10 weeks

The last stage varies the most in the amount of time it might take. Demolition should be quick and take a day or two. After that, we would work on upgrading your plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems as well as installing insulation and drywall as needed. Next, comes the flooring, cabinetry and countertops, followed by any additional plumbing fixtures. Paint and trim are the before last touches, followed by the final electrical fixtures and appliances. And there you have it—a brand new beautiful kitchen!

In the end, a kitchen renovation takes approximately three to four months, depending on the scale of the project. Remodeling your kitchen does require an investment in time and resources. However, this kind of renovation is well worth in the long run, both for the added value to your home and the increases functionality of a space that you use multiple times every day.
